The nine seasons

West Ham United spent eight of the nine seasons in the Premier League and one, 2011/12, outside it. Take City out and every one of the eight reads the same: up one place.

That place is City’s. Every club below City moves up one when City go. West Ham never climb further, and never fall short of it. Seventeenth becomes 16th in 2009/10; 20th becomes 19th in 2010/11; 7th becomes 6th in 2015/16.

It is not for want of results against City. West Ham played them 16 times, won two, drew three and took 9 points. Take City out and all 9 come off, and in no season is it enough to cost them a place. The free place absorbs it every time.

Even the game that settled a title changes nothing for West Ham. The 2013/14 season ended with City’s 2–0 win over West Ham, goals from Nasri and Kompany. Take City out and the game goes, and West Ham’s 40 points stand: 12th of 19.

The season outside the Premier League ended on 19 May 2012, with a 2–1 win over Blackpool in the Championship play-off final.

2010/11

Last either way

West Ham went down on the day they lost 3–2 at Wigan, after leading 2–0 at half-time. Beaten 3–1 at home and 2–1 away by City, they lose no points. They keep 33 and finish 19th of 19, six points short of 16th. Last either way.

2014/15

Sakho’s sixth

The 2–1 win over City in October goes, the day Sakho scored in a sixth consecutive league game. Forty-seven points become 44, and West Ham finish 11th, above West Brom on goal difference.

2015/16

Sixth, four off the top four

Their best season in either table, and the most they took off City. In September they won 2–1 at the Etihad, their first win there. In January they drew 2–2 at the Boleyn Ground, in their last season there. Both go: four points, and 62 becomes 58. Seventh becomes sixth, City’s place again, four points off fourth.

The money

City paid West Ham nothing in reported fees, and West Ham paid City nothing, so there is no City money to take out. Two players came on loan from City: Wayne Bridge in January 2011 and Joe Hart in summer 2017. Loans are listed, never totalled.

The relegation of 2010/11 happens in both tables, so no fate changes and no money is at stake.
