The nine seasons

Middlesbrough spent eight of these nine seasons outside the Premier League. Their one season in it, 2016/17, ended in relegation: 19th, on 28 points.

Against Manchester City they did something no other relegated club managed that season: they took points. The 1–1 at the Etihad in November came from Marten de Roon’s injury-time equaliser, and it sent City down to second. The 2–2 at home on 30 April was the other.

Take City out and both draws go. 28 becomes 26. The free place lifts Middlesbrough to 18th of 19, and that is still a relegation place, 14 points short of 16th. It is the free place and nothing more.

The money

The one sale to City came long before: Adam Johnson, in January 2010, for a reported fee of about £7m, with Middlesbrough outside the Premier League. It sits outside the club’s Premier League figures and outside the £315.5m City paid Premier League clubs. The money City paid is the one figure here that isn’t a guess: take City out and that money goes too.

Two players came the other way on loan, Alex Nimely in January 2012 and Jack Harrison in January 2018, both in seasons Middlesbrough spent outside the Premier League.
