Three relegations either way. One real climb.

Hull City had four Premier League seasons in these nine and went down in three. Take Manchester City out and all three relegations stand. The one real change is 2013/14, when Hull climb from 16th to 13th.

The nine seasons

Hull City were in the Premier League for four of these nine seasons: 2009/10, 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2016/17. They spent the other five outside it. Three of the four ended in relegation. Take Manchester City out and all three still do.

Hull took 5 points off City in eight league games, a win, two draws and five defeats, and every one comes off. Three seasons are the free place and nothing more: one place up, and that place is City’s. The fourth, 2013/14, is a real climb.

The last of the four is the plainest. In 2016/17 City beat Hull twice, so nothing comes off. Hull conceded 80 goals, the most in the league, and went down on 14 May with a 4–0 defeat at Crystal Palace. Without City they finish 17th of 19 on 34, and Watford are still six points clear of them.

2009/10

The win that goes

Hull drew 1–1 at City in November, then beat them 2–1 at home on 6 February 2010. Those four points are the most Hull took off City in any season, and both results come off.

30 points become 26: 18th of 19, eight short of 16th. For real Hull finished level with Burnley on 30. Without City they are three behind them. Relegated either way.

2013/14

Three places, same points

City beat Hull 2–0 away and 2–0 at home, so nothing comes off Hull’s 37. That is their best rebuilt finish: 13th, not 16th, five points clear of the drop. The free place, and two places beyond it. Hull and West Brom are the season’s real movers, three places each.

2014/15

Four points from safety

The 1–1 at the Etihad in February, Milner’s stoppage-time free-kick and all, comes off; the 4–2 home defeat in September had earned nothing. Hull finish on 34, 17th of 19, four points short of safety, and down.

The money

There is no City money in Hull’s story. The deals files for these nine seasons hold no transfer or loan between Hull and City in either direction. Hull’s own figures on /transfers/, which count only their Premier League seasons: £50.1m in and £47.2m out in reported fees, with 26 undisclosed deals.

No fate changes either, so no money is at stake in the table.
