Safe either way, one point lighter.

Huddersfield Town had one Premier League season in these nine, 2017/18, and stayed up. Take Manchester City out and they lose their point from the Etihad, slip behind Southampton on goal difference, and stay up anyway.

The nine seasons

Huddersfield Town spent eight of these nine seasons outside the Premier League. Their one season in it, 2017/18, ended in survival: 16th on 37 points.

They took one point off Manchester City, and here it is the one that counts. The 2–1 home defeat in November had earned nothing. That point came on 6 May, a 0–0 at the Etihad on the day City were handed the trophy, and it comes off. 37 becomes 36.

That cancels the free place. City leaving lifts every club below them a place, but the lost point leaves Huddersfield level with Southampton on 36, and Southampton’s goal difference is better, −17 to −29. So 16th for real is 16th of 19 without City: still safe, three points clear of the drop.

The money

City bought nothing from Huddersfield in these nine seasons. The traffic ran the other way. In their Premier League season Huddersfield paid City a club-record £8m in reported fees for Aaron Mooy, a fee reported as rising to £10m, a year after he had arrived on loan. Before that, outside the Premier League, they signed Donal McDermott on a free in summer 2011 and Jordy Hiwula for an undisclosed fee in summer 2015, and took Harry Bunn on loan in January 2014.
