Five seasons, one real climb, two seasons standing still.

Palace took four points off City in five Premier League seasons, and all four come off. They climb beyond City’s place once, in 2016/17, and finish exactly where they did for real in 2014/15 and 2017/18.

The nine seasons

Crystal Palace spent the last five of these nine seasons in the Premier League, from 2013/14 to 2017/18; the four before were outside it. Against City they won once, drew once and lost eight, taking four points. Take City out and all four go.

That shapes the whole run. In the three seasons Palace took nothing off City, they move up: 11th to 10th in 2013/14, 15th to 14th in 2015/16, and 14th to 12th in 2016/17. In the two seasons they did take points, those points cancel the free place, and Palace finish exactly where they did for real.

No fate is in play either way. In the rebuilt tables Palace never come closer than six points to the drop, or 19 points to fourth. In 2013/14 the rebuilt season still includes the game in which they came back from 3–0 down against Liverpool; that game never involved City, so it stays.

2014/15

Puncheon’s free-kick goes

Palace lost 3–0 at City on 20 December, a result that took City level on points at the top. In April they won the return 2–1 at home, Puncheon’s free-kick and all. That win comes off, 48 becomes 45, and Everton pass them. Tenth either way.

The rest of their season stands, including the 1–0 defeat by Chelsea on 3 May that won Chelsea the title with three games to spare.

2016/17

The one real climb

Beaten 2–1 at home and 5–0 away, Palace lose nothing. Their 41 points finish 12th of 19, level with Leicester and Swansea and ahead of both on goal difference. That is two places, one of them beyond City’s: Palace are among the five real movers that season, with Arsenal, Bournemouth, West Brom and Stoke.

2017/18

The 0–0 that ended the run

After a 5–0 defeat at City in September, Palace held City 0–0 at home on New Year’s Eve, the draw that ended City’s 18-game league winning run. Take City out and that point comes off. 44 becomes 43, a point behind Bournemouth, who pass them. Palace stay 11th, one of only two clubs not to climb.

The money

No fee changed hands with City. Two players came on loan from City, both while Palace were outside the Premier League: Ryan McGivern in summer 2011 and Alex Nimely in January 2013. Loans are listed, never totalled. Across their five Premier League seasons Palace spent £145.2m in reported fees and received £39.0m, with 36 deals undisclosed.
