The first Premier League win goes. Cardiff still go down.

Cardiff’s one Premier League season here is 2013/14, and their first win in it came against City. Take City out and that 3–2 goes: 30 points become 27, and Cardiff are relegated either way.

The nine seasons

Cardiff City had one Premier League season in these nine: 2013/14. The other eight were spent outside the Premier League.

It began with the result the rebuild removes. On 25 August Cardiff beat City 3–2 in their first top-flight home game for 51 years: their first Premier League win. Take City out and that win goes, and three points with it. The 4–2 defeat at City in January had earned nothing, so it changes nothing.

30 becomes 27. For real Cardiff finished 20th. Without City they are 19th of 19: last either way, seven points from safety. The one place gained is City’s, and it is the free place and no more. Norwich, Fulham and Cardiff still go down.

So the rebuilt table keeps the season’s ending and takes away the afternoon that opened it.

The money

No fee changed hands with City in Cardiff’s Premier League season. The one sale came later: Rabbi Matondo joined City in January 2017 for an undisclosed fee, while Cardiff were outside the Premier League. That one undisclosed deal sits outside the club’s Premier League figures and outside the £315.5m City paid Premier League clubs. Two players came on loan from City, also while Cardiff were outside the Premier League: Kelvin Etuhu in summer 2009 and Craig Bellamy in summer 2010. Loans are listed, never totalled.
