Beat City in 2015, finish bottom without them.

Four Premier League seasons, two relegations, and the same two either way. The one change is where Burnley land in 2014/15: their win over City comes off, and they finish last of 19, behind QPR by a single goal.

The nine seasons

Burnley had four Premier League seasons in these nine: 2009/10, 2014/15, 2016/17 and 2017/18. The other five were spent outside the Premier League. Take City out and their fate doesn’t change once: relegated in 2009/10 and 2014/15 either way, safe in 2016/17 and 2017/18 either way.

Against City they took six points in eight league games: one win, three draws, four defeats. All six come off. In 2009/10, back in the top flight after 33 years, they drew 3–3 at City and were beaten 6–1 at home. The point goes, 30 becomes 29, and Burnley are 17th of 19, five short of safety. The later seasons are City’s place and no more: 15th on 40 in 2016/17, then 6th on 53 in 2017/18, Burnley’s best rebuilt finish.

2014/15

The win that sends them to the bottom

Burnley took four points off City that season, level with Arsenal for the most of any club: a 2–2 at City on 28 December and a 1–0 win at home on 14 March. Both come off. 33 becomes 29, level with QPR, and Burnley are last of 19 on goal difference, −26 to −25. A single goal. QPR, relegated by City’s 6–0 in May, climb off the bottom. Burnley drop into it, nine points from safety.

The money

No fee changed hands with City. Three players came on loan from City, all while Burnley were outside the Premier League: John Guidetti in January 2011, then Ben Mee and Kieran Trippier in summer 2011. Loans are listed, never totalled.
